NEWS

Sept. may bring push for Iran sanctions

President Barack Obama has set a timeline — warning Tehran it must show willingness to negotiate an end to its nuclear program by September or face consequences.

Tehran police chief: Few arrests in protest

Iranian worshippers listen to a Friday prayer sermon at the Tehran University campus in Tehran.Tehran's police chief said Friday that few arrests were made in opposition protests that erupted a day earlier in the Iranian capital in an opposition attempt to revive street demonstrations over the country's disputed election.

Popular Tehran Bureau site covers Iran from Mass.

Kelly Niknejad sits next to the computers she uses to work on her Web site TehranBureau.com  in Newton, Mass. In a matter of weeks, the news outlet she had created just months earlier became a must-read for many who closely followed the disputed re-election of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. In a matter of weeks, Kelly Golnoush Niknejad's news outlet, Tehran Bureau Web site, became a must-read for many who closely followed the disputed election in Iran. Yet she is not operating from he Iranian capital, but from a laptop in the quaint living room in  suburban Boston.

Analysis: Hopes fading for Iran nuke talks

Analysis: New waves of acrimony between Iran and world powers over the Islamic Republic's election are dimming  prospects for meaningful negotiations over Tehran's nuclear program.

Newsweek: Iran protests echo Polish movement

Iran's Twitter-fueled protests may be using modern technology, but they're drawing from an older playbook: Poland's Solidarity movement of the 1980s.

Newsweek: Why Iran isn't like Europe in 1989

Whenever we see the kinds of images that have been coming out of Iran over the past two weeks, we tend to think back to 1989 and Eastern Europe. Could Iran yet undergo its own velvet revolution? It's possible but unlikely.

Newsweek: How Iran's election is playing in Iraq

Iraq's leaders are trying to say as little as possible about Iran's post-election problems—in public, anyway. No matter what Iraq's leaders may think of Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, they don't want to antagonize the Supreme Leader.

Newsweek: Why Arab rulers see threats in Iran protests

Dictators all over the world have been watching Iran for lessons learned. They also know just how tenuous their power will become if they have to face massive, measured, relentless demonstrations of the kind that changed the face of Iran last week.

Iran's women protest: Headscarves, rocks

In a part of the Muslim world where women are often perceived of as the repressed gender, images of Iranian women during and after the recent elections have catapulted Iran's female demonstrators into the forefront of the country's opposition movement. For years, women's defiance in Iran came in carefully planned flashes of hair under their head scarves, brightly painted fingernails and trendy clothing under bulky coats and cloaks.

Newsweek: Should we watch video of Neda dying?

The video of Neda Agha-Soltan's killing in Iran gives a face to other, less-public beatings and killings of opposition supporters, and makes the conflict inescapably real. Still, I have to wonder if its endless dissemination is doing us good, or harm.

Newsweek: Was there election fraud in Iran?

When there's vote-rigging, there are certain telltale signs that experts typically look for. Here are some of them, and a look at whether they happened in Iran.

Iran’s ex-empress speaks out about unrest

Farah Pahlavi, the shah of Iran's widow, described President Barack Obama's approach to Iran's election crisis as "diplomatic, pragmatic and wise."Among the many Iranians watching the country’s political turmoil from exile is the former empress of Iran. Farah Pahlavi, now 71, was forced into exile by the Iranian revolution of 1979.

Sacred lines have been crossed in Iran?

June 22: Iran's reaction to street protests has only gotten tougher. NBC’s chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel reports. (Today Show)In an interview with CFR,org, Karim Sadjadpour , a leading Iranian analyst, says that given the "unprecedented" scale of protests in Iran over the presidential election results, "it's very difficult to see how the status quo ante could prevail no matter what happens."

On the Web: 'Something must be done'

June 24: NBC Tehran bureau chief Ali Arouzi talks to MSNBC's Carlos Watson about the effectiveness of the Iranian government's crackdown on protests. (MSNBC)The cost of the violence, and its emotional and physical toll, is shared by some Iranians on various Web sites.

Media seeks ways around Iran clampdown

June 21: Iranian police have initiated an apparent violent crackdown on protesters who dare to speak against the government in the streets of Tehran as 10 of the demonstrators were reportedly killed. ITV's Juliet Bremner reports. (NBC News Channel)Iranian authorities have arrested 23 journalists and bloggers since post-election protests began a week ago, according to a media watchdog that says reporters are a "priority target" for Iran's leadership.

Newsweek: The rise of Ayatollah Khamenei

Many opposition supporters suspect that pro-Ahmadinejad thugs have been staging incidents in order to justify an official backlash.

Web support pours out for Iran protesters

Google added Farsi to its online translator, calling it "one more tool that Persian speakers can use to communicate directly to the world, and vice versa." In the aftermath of the disputed Iranian election, Internet companies and individuals around the world have stepped in to help Iranians communicate and organize.

One woman's personal window into Iran

June 19: Reza Aslan, a professor at the University of California, Riverside, and author, talks about about how Internet activists from around the globe are assisting the opposition in Iran.  (Nightly News)An Internet social network is giving one Iranian-American a treasured link to relatives in Tehran — and a window into the protests roiling her father's homeland.

Activism evolves for the digital age

June 22: Msnbc.com’s Helen Popkin discusses how Twitter and amateur videos are keeping the world informed on the events taking place inside Iran.  (MSNBC)The social network commonly characterized as transmitting narcissism in 140 characters or less is also the go-to source for immediate updates on the events following Iran’s protested presidential election.

Violent protests have broken out in Tehran after incumbent president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared the winner of Iran’s disputed presidential election.

NYC 18th of Tir Rally, Washington Square, 7/9

In what appeared to be one of the largest NYC gatherings to date, hundreds gathered in Washington Square Park near New York University for an event honoring the 18th of Tir uprising and supporting current protesters in Iran.

By far the most energized of the New York rallies, organizers had coordinated chants, musicians, and had invited poets and politicians to speak, including Ali-Akbar Mousavi Khoeini, a prominent former member of the Iranian parliament. There was also a long green banner bearing the name of rally participants, in coordination with organizers in Toronto.

There seemed to be a sense of renewed hope after what was being considered a historic second round of protests across Iran.
